Koh Gen Do review – Maifanshi Moisture Foundation and Natural Lighting Powder

Howdy peeps! I thought I would do a review of some makeup I purchased recently, Koh Gen Do Maifanshi Moisture Foundation and Natural Lighting Powder. I went to Sephora a couple of weeks ago to pick up a new foundation. I had been using Revlon Colorstay in Sand Beige, in the normal to dry skin formula, as well as the E.L.F. HD powder. However, it seemed like my face kept breaking out after I would wear a full day of makeup. I was poking around in Sephora trying out different foundations, and I had settled on the MUF HD foundation. Annoyingly, they didn’t have my color in stock. I had just decided to go home and order it online, when one of the sales girls asked me if I had tried the Koh Gen Do brand. I had not, so she took me over to the display and had me try some samples. Ok, she totally upsold the heck out of me. Props to that girl! The Koh Gen Do stuff is waaaay more expensive than I would have ever considered spending on a foundation. I paid $62 for .71 oz/20g of foundation and $42 for .42 oz/12 g of powder. Insane. I will totally be looking for sales when I need to repurchase this. However, before she let me ogle the price, she tried the foundation on me. I explained to her that my skin tends to be dry and that I wanted a full coverage foundation, so she chose the Maifanshi Moisture foundation over the Aqua Foundation, which apparently is more like a tinted moisturizer. So, I fell in love with the feeling of the foundation when she applied it to my skin. If feels like a really silky moisturizer. It doesn’t feel sticky or slippery, just smooth and creamy and then it dries down. Also, it looks amazing. Like my skin but better, really. It’s not a super full coverage like the one I was used to, but I can easily layer it for more coverage in places. My husband really likes it and thinks it looks fantastic. I got the Maifanshi Moisture foundation in # 113. I also got the Natural Lighting powder to set it with, because I like a more matte finish to my skin. It’s a pale nude color, with very fine sparkles in it. However, it doesn’t look glittery or sparkelly when I wear it. Just sort of glowy. I’ve been using both of these for a few weeks now and I still love them.

I don’t usually do makeup reviews so I tried to take as many pics as possible. Hope I did a good job! Let’s start with the packaging. It is very pretty and sophisticated, IMO. The whole Koh Gen Do display at Sephora is pretty eye catching, all glossy red and black. It looks like makeup an Asian assassin girl would wear. The Maifanshi Moisture foundation comes in a red squeezy tube with a black lid. It has a fine tip. I love this! It makes using the foundation very easy. I just squeeze out a little bit, like a pea sized amount. No gunky mess around the lid like in a bottle. It’s also really easy to take with me in my purse, I don’t have to worry about the bottle shattering or the lid coming off in transit and pouring foundation all over my stuff.

The texture is sort of like a thick cream, not runny. It applies very smoothly though, even on my dry skin. It’s easy to spread around.

The powder comes in a large clear plastic jar. It is pretty solid and nice feeling. It has a black lid with a nice looking monogram on it. The lid is glossy, so I’ve already scuffed it a bit. Oh well! It has the usual plastic covering with small holes over the powder, which is covered by a powder puff. The powder puff is very nice, soft and well made. It has a little ribbon with Koh Gen Do embroidered on it. Mine has powder all over it since I’ve been using it. The lid seems to stay on nice and tight, I haven’t had any trouble with powder leaking out the sides and making a mess.

Okay, I took some before and after shots for youse guys. My skin is in terrible shape today, it’s all dry and icky. Usually it looks quite a bit better with no makeup on, promise! Also, It’s damned hard to get good, non blurry, well lit pics! I had my husband take some and then I took some more selfies with my little digital camera to show the close up of the makeup on my skin better.

Haha! Okay, obviously better but it’s hard to tell exactly what’s going on with the foundation. Here’s some close ups of my skin. As  you can see, it still looks like skin, it has texture and all. It just looks like nicer skin. These are in natural lighting, right by a window.

I’m also wearing a bit of MAC Studio Sculpt concealer under my eyes on on my zits, and a lick of taupe eyeshadow and mascara, and a bit of blush. The color on my lips is something I picked up at the drugstore last night, considerably more affordable than my foundation. Haha! It’s a Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm in Audacious. It was under $10 at my local CVS. I don’t want to review it right now since I just got it and I haven’t worn it all day, but first impressions are I love it. I love the color, I love the smoothness of it. I love the look of matte lips, but they are also hard for me to wear since I have super dry lips. (And the braces aren’t helping!) I’ve been trying to remember to drink more water so that I can wear my matte lips!!! Anywhoo, there you go. The Koh Gen Do foundation and powder are expensive but amazing. I love them. Also, my Sephora order from my Christmas gift card should be arriving today! I can’t wait! I will take photos and do reviews for all my goodies in a week or so.

Great review. The makeup looks amazing on your skin!
I have extremely dry lips and am on a constant search for a lipstick that doesn’t flake on my lips. I have tried many different brands of lip conditioners as well as plain old Vaseline. Nothing seems to work. So very frustrating… I am anxious to see how you like the Revlon balm. Thanks for pics and review.

Thank you! The search for non-drying lipstick is lifelong for me too! I will post up a review of the Revlon balm soon – I’ve been wearing it so I can see how it does long term.
